Adult Leader Training

The training of adult leaders to better carry out the scout program is vital to the mission of the Boy Scouts of America.  This page was created to help guide leaders through training opportunities available through both the Yocona Area Council and the Boy Scouts of America. (Click here to go to the BSA's Training Page. ) As you complete training courses remeber that as leaders we want to strive to continune our education.  No training course is the be all end all of training there is always more training to recieve. 

What makes a "Trained" Leader?
To be considered a "trained" leader you must have have completed the courses listed below. Keep in mind that this recognition does not mean a leader is fully trained, rather this is the minimal level of training all adults should have.  In fact, additional training courses are required for some activities. Please consult the Guide to Safe Scouting & complete a Tour Plan to ensure unit meets training guidelines before planning any activity.

  1. Youth Protection *All leaders must complete Youth Protection to register in the BSA*
  2. Leader Specific Training for your registered position
  3. Boy Scout leaders must also have Introduction to Outdoor Skills
  Basic Leader Training Courses Upcoming Training Dates
Youth Protection Training - Required of all leaders before assuming leadership position and must be renewed every two years.  You may complete the course online at or contact your district training chairman for available courses. 

This Is Scouting - This is Scouting is a required introductory lesson for all programs of the BSA.  You should take this training as soon as you become interested in being a leader in the BSA.  This is Scouting is offered on-line at or contact your district training chairman for available courses.
Fast Start Training - Fast Start Training should be taken before your first meeting.  This training will help you get started and teach you how to conduct for first few months of meetings. Offered for Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing leaders at or contact your district training chairman for available courses. 

Leader Specific Training - Leader Specific Training courses for all Scouting adult leadership positions are offered at the district level with Cub Scout Leader Specific Training courses also being offered online. You should try to take this training within the first few months of leadership.  Courses are generally offered on a quarterly basis.  To check for upcoming courses contact your District Executive or check the training calendar for dates and registration.

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is a training event that introduces leaders and parents to the skills needed to plan and conduct pack outdoor activities, particularly pack camping. Check the training calendar for dates and registration.


Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills - (IOLS) Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Scout coaches and Venturing Leaders. Check the training calendar for dates and registration.  
  Other Training Courses  

Hazardous Weather Training - Hazardous Weather Training is required for at least one leader in attendance at every Unit Campout. Hazardous Weather Training is available online at


Specific Activity Trainings - Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Climb on Safely, and Trek Safely can be taken online at or in person during Boy Scout Summer Camp. Training in a specific activity is required for at least one leader in attendance at every unit campout involving that activity.


Supplemental offers additional training for Unit Committees, Generational Diversity, District Committees, Scoutparents, Leave No Trace, Disc Golf and much more.


University of Scouting - This Course is offered bi-annually by the Yocona Area Council.  Much like college you will pick the classes you need the most to get your degree. The next University of Scouting has not been scheduled.



Wood Badge is the premier Leadership Development Course for Scouters.  This 6 day long experience takes your leadership skills to the next level. This course is held in the Yocona Area Council every two years. The next Wood Badge course is set for Spring 2020. Check back for more information.  



Powder Horn is a training opportunity designed to expose the Venturing or Boy Scout leaders and youth to activities and resources necessary to operate a successful Venturing Crew or Scout Troop High Adventure program.  The next Powder Horn training is scheduled for Spring 2021.  Check back for dates and more information.



COPE Instructor Training Project COPE s a challenge and team-building course.  We are looking for adults interested in becoming trained instructors to facilitate courses hosted at Camp Yocona. Check the training calendar for dates and registraiton.


Leave No Trace  is not simply a program for visiting the backcountry, it is an attitude and a way of life that begins with you and your unit. There are many different levels of Leave No Trace ranging from an Awareness Workshop to Master Educator Training. For more information contact the Scout Office.
