The Official History
of Chicksa 202

In The Beginning:
C. L. "Scottie" Carslile was scoutmaster of a troop in Corinth.
Scottie had moved to northeast Mississippi from Atlanta, Georgia
where he had also worked with scouting. In 1941, Scottie brought
a team from Atlanta to conduct the first induction ceremony in
the state with Alex Beiler as the chief of that team. The induction
of a group took place at the first of the two weeks of summer camp.
The boys inducted at the first ceremony served to induct a group
during the last week of camp. This group of arrowmen make up the
charter members of Chicksa 202. The lodge has been chartered
and very active since that time.

Why The Name "Chicksa":
The Indian tribe that inhabited the northern part of Mississippi was
the Chickasaw. The first chief of the Mighty Chickasaw Nation was
named Chicksa.

History of The Chickasaw Nation:

The Chickasaw tribe was looking for a new area to inhabit. The land in southern Texas where they lived was not able to support the tribe. The tribe had a sacred stick that was painted with red and white stripes. The red signified war and the white signified peace. There were even numbers of red and white stripes to create a balance. The tribe would travel by day and when they would stop for the night, they would go outside the camp and stick the stick into the ground. The next morning, the leaders of the tribe would go to the stick and the stick would not be standing up straight. The tribe would travel in the direction the stick leaned. The tribe traveled, following the guidance of the sacred red and white stick, from Texas to a place close to the center of the state of Georgia and then back to a spot very close to the location of Tupelo in northeast Mississippi where the stick remained vertical over night and grew as a dogwood tree. The tribe settled in that area until they were moved to a reservation. It is thought that the tribe had a difference of opinion and split into two tribes, the Choctaw with Chief Chocta and the Chickasaw with Chief Chicksa. The Choctaw moved south and set up that nation. The Chickasaw nation was not a warring nation but was never defeated in battle.
